SOHI Issue 5 - $1.50 with another mag purchase

$1.50

Why not add a back-issue to your basket? Here is the editor's letter from our Summer issue.

Trying to come up with just a few words to sum up three months of work and many hours of rumination is probably one of the hardest production tasks in the making of your quarterly SOHI. Fashion mags have trotted out all the usual cliches over the years, stealing song titles like 'Forever Young' by Alphaville and 'Young at Heart' by Bananarama. We certainly don't want SOHI sounding tired, so we quickly put a line through those. Then we toyed with phrases like 'Wasted on the Young', which sounds whimsical at first but has a slightly sardonic aftertaste, bringing to mind adult malcontents who sadly wasted their youth.
Then there was the problem of our single and as yet childless friends. They worried that the kids issue of SOHI would exclude them. We ran through our content ideas and completely allayed their concerns. You see, as it happens, grown ups like ice cream sandwiches. We've even gone so far as to give some adults-only recipe ideas. And our story about Div Williams and her Rose Seidler dollhouse shows us a depth of obsession and detail that only an adult could express. Finally Cecily Paterson's interview with Ange Clarke about her autistic son grappling with the challenges of early adulthood quite literally brought a tear to our eye (Cecily confessed a few tears were shed during the interview as well!) The challenges of fitting into a society while suffering from illness or disability have been experienced by many adults we know. We can only try and imagine the compounding effects of puberty and society's ignorance of the full autistic spectrum.
This issue, clichéd as this will sound, really is for the young at heart. SOHI is about creative living and there's nothing more creative than play. We can learn a lot from the little.
