SOHI is a hand numbered award winning magazine about creative living in the Southern Highlands and South Coast of Australia.
We thought the best way to introduce you to this issue would be to preview our editors letter here:
What does love mean to you? Does it mean holding your little family close, watching G rated movies together, eating popcorn on your old sofa? Does it mean making a superhuman effort to keep your blood pressure in check while you discuss the mortgage? Does it mean moulding your dreams to suit your partner’s and keeping an open heart to the changes? Is love easy for you? Is it your full time job or a casual dalliance? Or is love something you wish for? An ideal, not yet a reality? Spring is the time for romance, and when we decided to theme this issue, we hadn’t really thought about the multiple forms love can take. We all make happy - and sometimes unhappy - sacrifices for love. Sometimes life’s ‘admin’ can seem never ending, our relationships seeming a little bit more like a business partnership. But as any good relationship counsellor will tell you, making time for each other is the key to enjoying your relationships. And so we bring you Date Night.
This issue is really about making it work. In our quest for stories of romance, we found love in many modern forms. We visit the Burrawang home of Susan Buret and Faye Sampson. Susan followed in Faye’s rural footsteps and has willingly compromised herself into a beautiful corner of the world and an idyllic creative life. We talk with *Rachael and her struggle with her small son’s heart condition. She explains how Date Night saved her marriage. And we tell the story of Karen Stanton who has honoured her late husband by taking on what she imagines would have been his dream architectural project - restoring Eridge Lodge at Burradoo.
We hope you find inspiration in these pages and that the stories of your neighbours help to expand your definition of romance and love as they have ours.
